History

Shinju was raised by a wealthy couple, and though he was often spoiled by them with gifts and trips to places all over the country, what he enjoyed the most was spending time with his often-busy parents. They made sure to instill in him the importance of helping others, and he grew to be a polite and helpful young man, if not with a bit of an ego.

A few months before his 18th birthday, Shinju's house was burned to the ground, taking his parents and everything he knew with it, and while he was recovering, he discovered many of his friends at school had met the same fate, and he attempted to kill himself. Soon after he recovered physically, he was sent to a psychiatric ward to help repair the emotional damage. Although for weeks he hated the idea of living, he met with a visitor who planted the idea of revenge in his head, and eventually he started to cooperate with that goal in mind.

[On the day he was to be released, he met a girl he'd known who he realized was "Ryoko", the one who he believed was responsible for his loss. Though he tried to attack her, he was escorted out of the building, where he and the other patients were attacked themselves, leaving only Shinju alive. The sight of this caused him to black out and temporarily lose his memories.] Eventually, he was released, his determination to find the one who killed his parents strong. He was convinced it was a girl who called herself Ryoko, the apparent leader of a vigilante group.

Taken into a company known as ECLIPSE, a large conglomerate that controlled most of the economy, he became a guard at the behest of the head of security, Zekarion, and soon became dependent on him.
[Several weeks into his amnesia, Ryoko appeared in disguise and fooled him into believing they had promised a meeting. She led him to a secret location, and his memories came back to him; he attempted to choke her, only to be met with poisoned claws that paralyzed him temporarily and clouded his eyes.] Several weeks into his training, he encountered a girl he knew from school, much to his surprise. She had been missing for several months, and so in order to speak about their respective experiences, he followed her to a secret location. However, he soon connected the dots and found out that the girl Katsura he knew from school was Ryoko, and attempted to choke her. Unfortunately, he was met with poisoned claws that paralyzed him temporarily and clouded his eyes. When he could move again, a day later, he contacted Zekarion and was rescued. However, his vision was lost, due to the unknown nature of the poison.

When he recovered, he dedicated himself to killing Ryoko. Due to his intimidating demeanor, he was called "Hellfire" and avoided. The few friends he made helped him when he struggled, despite his attempts to push them away. Unfortunately, he ended up gravely injuring one of them when he attempted to help Shinju during an attack on the building, and Shinju never met him again. Full of guilt, He focused more on his training and studies, and his day-to-day life began to feel mechanical.

Ryoko confronted him again weeks later, bringing an antidote to the poison: her blood. Although it was forced on him, he regained his vision and started to question his beliefs. A few days later, he sought her out and asked her to take him with her, which she did. His brief stay at her organization's HQ opened his eyes to the cruel things ECLIPSE had been doing, and he discovered the people he had been fighting were struggling to end these cruelties and expose the organization.

One day when Ryoko had taken a group to gather information, Zekarion managed to contact him, claiming he had taken her hostage. If he came to surrender himself, he'd let her go; now suspecting that Zekarion had been the one to kill his parents, Shinju nonetheless made his way to the building to help. Unfortunately, he'd been tricked, and Zekarion cursed him while freely admitting to his crimes. The curse effectually made Shinju unable to reject Zekarion's orders, as it would cause him great pain whenever activated or if he attempted to get out of it by killing himself.

The two weeks that followed were the most painful Shinju had experienced yet. Although he didn't wish to fight, he had to take up his sword again, and he was forced to suffer under the abuse and cruel words of his parents' murderer. Eventually, it felt as if the only way out was death, and he came up with solution: he lured Ryoko away and acted as if he was going to shoot her, causing her instinct to kick in and attack him. His subsequent wounds left him nearly dead and broke the curse, but he was discovered and taken to the nearby hospital.

His recovery over the next couple of weeks was thanks to the nurse who discovered him, Maria, and she invited Shinju to stay at her home with her husband. He discovered that they were the parents of the friend he'd injured at ECLIPSE, and that the boy had passed away, leaving him conflicted as to whether he should continue taking advantage of their hospitality. A few days later, he took a walk to try and sort out his thoughts...
